stupid grins.
I almost busted my stitches when Sam sent this to me today.
Here is my brother, Leah, Sam and myself all trying to imitate Sam’s cheesy grin.

During the pre-surgery purge of the house I stumbled on an old sailor hat which Leah decided was a sign that I should wear a different goofy hat every day of recovery.
Here we are at dinner last night modeling the first four days worth of hats. Hallie’s got the sailor hat from day one, Miriam is strutting the cowboy hat from day two, Leah is making the IMPs proud and I’m conducting all the trains on day four.
Got to keep a sense of humor when you are inside all day…

All is well over here in the recovery center, aka our house.
Today is day four post surgery and so far it is my favorite yet. I got up this morning not feeling nauseous, a first in a while, and then went back to visit the surgeon to get my drains out. I’m having an easier time sitting up and walking, and as an added bonus going to the doc meant my first trip out of the house since Tuesday.
If you are interested, I’ve posted some of the photos so far of my recovery. Don’t worry, nothing graphic, mostly me sleeping, me visiting with friends and me wearing funny hats. Gots to keep a sense of humor.
Thank you for all the loving phone calls, texts and emails. More soon.

Leah let me jump on the computer just long enough to read all of the emails from friends that have stacked up today while I mostly slept and moved very slowly. (I’m probably biased, but I think I have the best nurse ever.)
I’ll post a few photos tmw, but just know that everything went great today. My surgery only lasted two hours and I was home and asleep in my bed by 11:30am.
Thank you for all the loving texts, emails, and phonecalls today. I feel lucky to have you all in my life.
Btw… this is a photo of me sleeping by a lake in the Berkshires this summer. That’s where I’ll be sleeping in my dreams tonight.

i kept trying to think of a visual to represent tmw’s surgery but they were either too crass or too crazy.
so instead, i’ll go simple. i feel totally peaceful on this night before i go under the knife.
i’ll post as soon as i’m able, or sooner if i can convince leah to do so for me.
much love.
After years of sitting on my “should read” list, I’m finally reading Naomi Klein’s No Logo. Granted I’m only 40 pages in, but I’ve already had a revelatory moment that given that the tactics of branding and marketing changed in the early 1990s, I have little to no context about how the world looked before branding was so omnipresent.
Klein’s latest book, The Shock Doctrine, has just been published in paperback and she’s making appearances in New York and DC to promote the release. I hoped that she would come out to San Francisco, but the upside to checking her tour schedule was finding this short film that she collaborated on with Alfonso CuarĂ³n which introduces the main themes of the book.
