live from commencement

my view of graduation.

just wanted to live up to being voted “most likely to blog about this moment.”

thirty on thirty

Happy 30!, originally uploaded by katerw.

I rang in my thirties with my first (and definitely last) all-nighter for grad school.

It didn’t really feel like a birthday, just one very long, very delirious day. Instead of being bummed about being under the finals crunch, I decided to consider today an opportunity to be grateful for (literally) every single hour.

I’m bleary eyed and exhausted, but so thankful for all the good things in my life.

Here are 24 reasons why I am happy right now, one for every hour of my birthday that I’ve been awake. (And in no real particular order)

1. This city still takes my breath away, San Francisco I love thee.
2. Leah. Everything in life is better with you.
3. School ending. It has been an amazing ride, but I’m thankful for the light at the end of the tunnel.
4. Yoga.
5. Jennifer, Eric, Brad and of course Rusty, for making me feel so at home at Urban Flow.
6. Practicing next to Bethany.
7. My parents coming to visit next week!
8. Brendan.
9. Our little birthday escape to Yosemite earlier in the month.
10. CoffeeBar.
11. My new digital camera. (happy birthday to me!)
12. Nina & Meredith, for being such incredible friends to Leah.
13. My classmates are going to graduate and take off in fantastic directions.
14. (The other) Kate, Caitlin & Sam are all also about to graduate!
15. My new ice cream maker. (Hello summer!)
16. Exciting restaurant plans this week: Nopalito, Frances, Serpentine and… ?
17. Chloe’s bicycle tour that I want to go on.
18. Dreams of producing documentaries.
19. Reading for pleasure.
20. Fancy chocolate.
21. Unexpected birthday wishes.
22. Feeling peaceful.
23. Everyone in my life that has put up with me canceling plans for the past two years. I’m ready to play now…

and perhaps most importantly… #24: going to bed right now!

I’ve been up for something like 40 hours straight… time for some serious shut eye, at least 5 hours worth.

making order out of tangles

Nothing is more apt to illustrate my day than the action of warping the loom for a new weaving.

I started with one big mess of string and it is starting to come together into something neater. With luck it might even be beautiful. Here’s hoping the rest of the semester plays out accordingly.

sunday treats & new dorks

After four consecutive days of homework, punctuated by yoga (or was it vice versa?), I got to treat myself a bit today, in between more homework of course.

First, a post-yoga/pre-brunch cocktail at Serpentine. I was really hoping the restaurant’s name, white walls & bricks meant the owners were Jefferson appreciators but apparently the restaurant is situated on serpentine bedrock.

By the way… I learned this week to drink after yoga, not before. Take heed.

Next up, a cappuccino from my usual spot at Coffee Bar. What made today special was the welcome addition of the cookie…

treats

The not-so-welcome addition to the experience were the four software engineers parked to my right loudly relating the details of their offer letters, pumping up their start-up plans and arguing over code. It was enough to make me start to second guess my own web venture plans

So in honor of those chatty code monkeys and to this city of great web expectations, another tribute of sorts to SF:

prototyping at home

This is what a hot Saturday night looks like exactly 20 days before we pitch our Venture to our classmates, professors and various invited guests… (want to join?)

Big, mad love to Leah for making dinner so that Tim and I could focus on prototyping our pitch. Take note… In a pinch, the refrigerator acts as an effective post-it surface. After three hours of rearranging our ideas, sketching out presentation concepts and taking the occasional break for skateboarding videos and chocolate it appears we have landed on a narrative. More to come…
