my summer vacation day one: from brooklyn to the heights
Summer has arrived. Well, technically it arrives next week, but Leah and I have arrived at our summer. We’re spending three weeks back East with family and friends, splitting our time between three of the five boroughs and the DC-metro area.
Here’s our first 24 hours or so in pictures, beginning with boarding the plane:

Goodbye San Francisco… Leaving from SFO sometimes gives you the most spectacular aerial views.

I managed to sleep in a bunch and then spend a few hours catching up on all sorts of life management stuff that I neglected while wrapping up work and our house. We finally ventured outside in the late afternoon for a walk through Prospect Park that ended with a visit to the central branch of the Brooklyn Public Library. While not quite as spectacular (and probably not as photographed) as the Manhattan NYPL, the Brooklyn building had its own special deco charm.

After grabbing some food from Leah’s parents we jumped the subway from Park Slope up to Midtown for a night on Broadway. Seen below is the effect of Leah’s frantic schedule of late… falling asleep on the R.

I know it is cheesy, but I have such a soft spot in my heart for Times Square. Tonight was rainy and typically crowded, but I enjoyed seeing a familiar face up amidst the neon. (As a side note, I met a writer/producer from “The Riches” last weekend at the wedding. Has anyone watched it? I’ve heard good things.)

There are few things I love more in life than the theater, so on our inaugural night in New York, Leah treated me to tickets to “In the Heights.” Thankfully she bought our seats months ago for our anniversary and before last Sunday’s Tony’s where the show won Best Musical. After seeing the performance it was more than deserved. I’ve written about Leah’s connection to the show previously… it was totally fun to have that point of reference while watching tonight.

Finally, we capped the evening with at Kyotofu, a few blocks away from the Richard Rogers. Leave it to my brother, who at the prompting of a text message during intermission for a nearby post-show treat was able to suggest a swanky “only in new york” japanese tofu/soy based dessert bar. Too bad I didn’t snap a photo of our soft serve chocolate soy ice cream topped with fresh fruit. Yum. 49th and 9th, if you ever find yourself nearby…

Off to sleep now… tomorrow is largely unplanned which is a nice change to my usual travel style. Most likely a run in the park followed by a midtown coffee shop… or better yet, if the weather is nice, wifi and reading in Bryant Park.
