this american life: testosterone and public property

This American Life is almost always engaging, if not brilliant…but here are two recent highlights:

Episode 220: Testosterone, rerun Feb 22. Check out Act Two’s interview with an FTM dicussing the transition of his viewpoint after injecting T.

Episode 350: Human Resources, aired last weekend. Act One on the New York Public Schools’ purgatory for teachers is well worth a listen, but I was particularly interested in Act Two’s investigation of “The Plan” to remove black people from historical black neighborhoods. Especially it’s examination of the gentrification of Washington, D.C. I’ve often admired architectural reuse of older buildings but I suppose I naively hadn’t realized that some of these buildings might have been pulled out from the community. Rather than, the story we’re all told, that designers are re-purposing unused buildings. At the end of the broadcast, Ira Glas referred listeners to Empower DC. I hope to do a little more self-education around this and will report back.
