not quite a localvore

I’m not where near being a localvore, but I’d like to get closer.

So for the last few weeks I’ve been waking up on Saturday and hitting the Farmer’s Market. Even in the downpour last week it was such a tremendously rewarding trip. Since work on the film has kicked into high gear and my Saturdays are disappearing I’ve joined a CSA. Tonight I picked up my first small veggie box from Terra Firma. It’s like Christmas. Only healthier. Better for the world. And every Thursday! I know Thursday night’s veggie box will quickly rival Sunday’s NYTimes as the highlight of my week.

In an effort to also change the way I eat and consume food, I’ve also joined the just barely sprouted food Co-Op in Emeryville. The Cog is building itself off of the Park Slope Food Co-Op in Brooklyn. Leah grew up going to the Co-Op and her parents’ have been involved since its formation. It amazes me that they have 13,000 active members running this super efficient food distribution center. I have to admit I was a bit obsessed when we visited over the summer. Maybe it’s those 5 years I spent working for Whole Foods, but I was blown away by the operation.

The Cog is just in the early phases of development but I’m excited about its potential. They are mostly an online store with pickup times but have just started opening up on Saturdays for “shopping the shelves.” I hope to go by after my own weekend working for my first purchases.
