“if you have a Beethoven you don’t take away the piano.”
this week’s SF Weekly cover story, Girl/Boy Interrupted follows the growing off-label use of a puberty blocker to help transgender kids stave off the effects of their own hormones until they are old enough to supplement with the hormones of their desires.
by blocking the initial round of puberty new hormones can work on a “blank slate” creating more significant and similar results to biologically born men and women. for instance, without that initial flux of estrogen, shots of testosterone will give transgender boys adams apple, taller heights and more skeletal and muscle mass. likewise, initially blocking testosterone allows transgender girls to grow breasts and hips without ever having to cope with larger hands, adams apples and rougher faces.
it’s been a long time since i’ve read something that felt new and different in terms of treatments for transgender people. check it out.
