idiots with bombs.
i’ve got this stick to my stomach feeling right now.
what i didn’t mention in my earlier post about the fourth was that as we were walking home we saw multiple sirens and uniformed officers speed up to the park. it wasn’t all that surprising after-all there were hundreds of illegal fireworks happening. but 8 officers seemed an ineffective force against the hundreds, if not a thousand, people at the park. they were focused on a couple of people right by the bathrooms. we all guessed it was drug related, or some other similar infraction.
i hadn’t put the pieces together, but amidst the typical fireworks we heard, and felt, a massive bang that seemed disassociated with any real display. i remember the first one went off and it sounded so out of place, almost like a bomb. i remember telling leah that i thought i felt the soundwave rip by. it was unlike anything i’ve ever experienced.
but stupidly… i didn’t think too much about it. we heard a few more of these bomb-like noises… and walking home we ran into a friend when we heard the noise again. we all talked about how it felt out of place.
turns out we should have been worried.
the bomb-like noises and uniformed officers weren’t unrelated at all. according to several reports some fucker was throwing M60s* into the crowd. that’s what we were hearing. and one of them blew of a 16 year old girl’s hand. she’s a drummer in a local band and now her dad is circulating a letter trying to get more witnesses to come forward. the blog commentary on sfist and yelp seem to line up that it was some twenty-something mission hipster looking white dude with a fixie bike throwing shit from his bag. all it takes is one asshole to ruin something for everyone. and to screw up this girl’s body. i’m horrified. and saddened. there was something so spectacular wednesday night with this ragtag group of folks the vast majority of whom were acting responsibly. sometimes i can be so naive, trusting my surroundings and the good of people. i feel betrayed.
*while everyone keeps referring to the items as M60s i can’t seem to find any good information about them on the web. maybe they are referring to M80s.
