theatrical bonus features

leah indulged my inner fag and accompanied me last night to the new documentary “show business: the road to broadway” which follows the journey of four new musicals during the 2003-2004 season. and what a season it was. avenue q and wicked had huge success, while taboo and caroline, or change flopped. the doc was a little too forgiving and not all that critical but it successfully provided the behind the scenes footage theater dorks like myself scrounge youtube for. theater lacks a distribution method for the “bonus features” that fill all those double dvd sets.

a good bit of this juicy footage features the troubled cast and and production staff of the infamously foiled taboo. watching Rosie’s excitement at the beginning of the process is all the more tragic with the knowledge of how badly the production turned out.

for a taste of the tragedy check out this promo reel from 2003. any reader of this blog (or anyone in earshot) knows how much i adore Rosie, but i definitely cringed a bit watching her this:

and then… as some sort of redemption, watch raul esparza’s “being alive” from this year’s tony’s. he’s a complete diva, but completely captivating to watch:
