questioning.
years ago a wise older friend of mine pointed out to me that when meeting someone, the true test of their character was the kinds of questions they asked of you. or the questions they don’t ask.
i get so embarrassed when trying to introduce two friends from different circles and one of them takes no initiative to get to know the other. recently i was having a conversation with someone i hadn’t seen in a while and noticed that he didn’t ask a single question about my life. he made comments. he talked about himself. but for two hours, not one probing question. compare that to my fabulous house guest from the weekend who i must have introduced her to at least a half of a dozen people. she was constantly asking questions. asking followup questions to my friends’ responses. her questions made for such better and more interesting conversation.
so i’m reminding myself to ask more questions. to make an investment into the people i you meet, even if briefly.
