you can (still) get anything you want… at Alice’s Restaurant

growing up my Mom used to sing me Arlo Gutherie’s “Alice’s Restaurant”… well the chorus at least. i can’t imagine anyone repeating all 18 mins of it.

later it became, and still is, one of my favorite movies. incredibly enjoyable and totally 60s. i went throught a fixation on the 60s during middle school and high school and “Alice’s Restaurant” felt like the quintessential time capsule.

its been forty years since Arlo illegally dumped all of that trash, and NPR brought him into the studio to reminisce. i love Arlo’s description as “a song against stupidity.”

Lyrics to Alice’s Restaurant

Listen to Arlo sing it all on iTunes… all 18 minutes.

Man, I’ve been made to watch/listen to that movie and song for years. My parents have been to see him in concert in Ann Arbor 5 or 6 times in as many years. I got to see him when I was living there and it happened to be one of the few times he’s played Alice’s Restaurant live in a long long time (or so he said).

Still awesome, and the movie has made me want to live in a church and race shitty motorcycles all my life.
